Russia’s first hospice was opened by the British-Russian
Hospice Society in St Petersburg in 1990. It was the first of four
model hospices the Society has helped to establish as its launch pad
for a Russian hospice movement. These four demonstrated that the
hospice concept, which originated in Britain, could be adapted to
Russian practice. There are now hospices in many parts of Russia in
various stages of development, and more are in prospect. Victor Zorza, the prime mover of this initiative, left some money in trust for the development of hospice care in Russia, or, at the discretion of the trustees, in other parts of the former Soviet Union. The Victor Zorza Hospice Trust supports projects in Russia run by British charitable organisations which promote hospice principles and encourage the development of a Russian hospice network. These may include training and support programmes; educational projects to promote public awareness of the benefits of hospice care, or to give information and assistance in starting a local hospice; provision of medical textbooks and literature relating to palliative care; the provision of medical equipment under specified conditions. Large capital projects are not funded. Who can apply?Previous grants have included hospice training programmes in Perm and Samara and the establishment of a Russian language website. The trustees meet to consider applications three times a year. In the first instance a short (10 line) outline of your proposed project should be sent to The Victor Zorza Hospice Trust
